Standing Desk

This is the final configuration of my now "Standing Desk" workstation. The desktop is 41" off the ground and the monitor shelf is 10" above the desktop. The monitor screens are 4", 5" & 6" above the shelf. This is because the three monitors are not matched. Come on Viewsonic standardize already! So far I'm happy with the standing desk.

From an old-fashioned parade through the holiday lit streets of downtown Frederick to a charming tour of historic homes decked in festive décor, Celebrate Frederick presents six events sure to put you in the holiday spirit. Designed to appeal to all ages, these events capture the charm and ambience of downtown Frederick during the Holiday season. Please note date changes for the annual Scents & Sweets Competition, Festival of Lights, and the Kris Kringle Procession; as well as a location change for Scents & Sweets. Following is a listing of the 2010 Holidays in Historic Frederick events:

Holiday Art Competition & Exhibit; Wednesday, December 1ST; Delaplaine Visual Arts Center; 5:30p.m.

Take in a delightful exhibit of original holiday artwork created by local artists at the 2010 Holiday Art Competition. From the exhibit submissions, judges will select the winning work of art to be featured for the 2011 “The Holidays in Historic Downtown Frederick” event campaign. In addition to their work being featured in all forms of media, the winning artist will receive a $1,000 cash prize. This event is free to the public.

Scents & Sweets Competition & Exhibit; NEW DATE: Thursday, December 2ND; NEW LOCATION: Cultural Arts Center, 15 W. Patrick Street; 5:30 p.m.

Mark your calendars now, the 2010 Scents & Sweets Competition and Exhibit has moved to a new date, Thursday, December 2nd. Celebrate Frederick is partnering with the Frederick Arts Council and hosting the event at a new location, the Cultural Arts Center in downtown Frederick. Here you will find holiday scenes that you won’t believe are made out of gingerbread, and incredible combinations of fragrant flowers that you’ll want for your dining room table! Bakers and florists, both amateur and professional, create magnificent gingerbread houses and floral centerpieces along a holiday theme. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and by popular vote for cash prizes. This event is free to the public. While at the Cultural Arts Center, enjoy the annual Festival of Greens event brought to you by the Frederick Arts Council.

Festival of Lights; NEW DATE: Friday, December 3RD; 7:00 p.m.; City Hall Courtyard in Downtown Frederick

Don't miss one of the holiday season's most inspiring events. The Festival of Lights event has moved to a new date, Friday, December 3rd, and will be held annually on this new day! Each year this event brings the true spirit of the season to young and old alike. This year we are planning a program full of holiday goodwill and song to fill the square at the City Hall courtyard in downtown Frederick. This event begins at 6:30 p.m. with caroling groups downtown and congregates on the steps of City Hall (7 p.m.) and leads into an inspirational holiday program, which includes additional carols, greetings from local dignitaries, and an inspirational message. The highlight of the evening comes at the program's end, when the lights outside City Hall are dimmed, and candles are passed from neighbor to neighbor, filling the courtyard with light, as the audience sings "Silent Night". This event truly captures the meaning of the holiday season. This event is free to the public.

The Candlelight House Tour; Saturday, December 4TH, 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.; Sunday, December 5TH, Noon- 4:00 p.m.; Baker Park Area

The 2010 Candlelight House Tour highlights the charm of yesteryear with homes decorated in their finest holiday décor! Enjoy tours of the outside and inside of seven spectacular homes glowing with charm and holiday cheer. Luminaries will light your path and holiday sounds will fill the air as you stroll through Frederick as a part of this annual, self-guided tour. The Culler Lake Boat House serves as the Hospitality Center and unique tour stop. Tickets are $20 and will be available online beginning Friday, November 5th. Tickets will also become available in mid November at several locations in downtown Frederick including the Tourism Council.

Kris Kringle Procession; NEW DATE: Friday, December 10TH; Downtown Frederick and Baker Park; 6:30 p.m.

Celebrate Old World Holiday magic with this unique parade on a new day, Friday, December 10th as it winds through the beautifully illuminated streets of downtown Frederick. The procession features dance troupes, carolers, characters representing Frederick’s German/English heritage, as well as classic favorites such as Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and of course, Kris Kringle, truly mirroring the small town charm that makes Frederick so special during the Holidays! The parade route goes from East Street to East Patrick Street, turns onto N. Market Street, and then turns onto West Second Street, ending at the Baker Park Band Shell for an inspirational closing ceremony with music, entertainment and a variety of holiday cheer!

Children’s Weekend; Saturday, December 11TH & Sunday, December 12TH; Downtown Frederick

Fun for children of all ages, this year's Children's Weekend will be held Saturday, December 11 and Sunday, December 12. The joy of the holidays is embodied in the children who partake in a weekend full of activities just for them! From ornament painting and storytelling, to belsnickeling, and breakfast with Santa, there are a variety of activities hosted by Frederick City businesses that work together to create this magical weekend. CELEBRATE FREDERICK – A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Celebrate Frederick is looking for talented, skilled volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors and to staff its event and operating committees. The mission statement of the organization is to “work in partnership with the City of Frederick in the planning and implementation of special events and activities to offer the community a shared cultural experience.”

“This is the first time we have gone out to the entire community to seek participation on this broad a level,” said Amy Riley, special events manager for City of Frederick. “Our philosophy is openness and inclusiveness, and we invite everyone to participate. What better way to get involved in your community, to meet new friends, and to have fun planning Frederick’s most popular events!”

The Board of Directors skillfully provides direction, management, strategic planning and leadership to the organization and its event committees. Celebrate Frederick produces fourteen annual events in the City of Frederick each year, with signature events including Frederick’s 4th-An Independence Day Celebration, Summer Concert Series in Baker Park and In the Street.

The open positions and terms of office are as follows.

IN THE STREET FESTIVAL MOVING TO THE SECOND SATURDAY OF SEPTEMBER

July 29, 2010, Frederick MD – The 28th Annual In The Street celebration will move from the first Saturday in October to the second Saturday in September. This date change is permanent and the 2010 festival will be held on Saturday, September 11th. In addition, Light the Creek and On the Deck Party events are moved accordingly. Please also note that the On the Deck Party held annually at the Carroll Creek Parking Deck will move to a new, permanent location in 2010 - the Carroll Creek Amphitheatre. The event will be promoted as the “Up the Creek Party.”

The 2010 In The Street festival officially kicks-off Friday, September 10th, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with Light the Creek. The festival continues on Saturday, September 11th at 9:30a.m. with the Market Street Mile. At 11:00 a.m., In the Street officially begins and continues all day until 5:00 p.m. Following In The Street is the Up the Creek Party held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The reasons for the date change are as follows:

October is a month packed with events, locally and regionally. Celebrate Frederick wants to give an opportunity for other events to succeed and avoid the competition

September traditionally has warmer weather, with less chance of cold rain

Vendors and organizations that are engaged with other events in early October are now able to be a part of In The Street to help make it more successful

Come out and start the celebration early on Friday night with Frederick native, Scott Ambush. Now well known for being the bass player of Spyro Gyra, Ambush was influenced by rock and roll classics like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin as well as the jazz melodies of Stanley Clark and Return to Forever. He will be showing off his talent and rhythm on the bass Friday night, so come enjoy food, beer, wine, and the jazz rhythms of Scott Ambush as a preview of what Saturday has in store.

Second Street Stage presented by 99.9 WFRE

Event Sponsor WFRE will be hosting a variety of performances on this stage. Grammy Award winning artist, Taylor Swift, was a past performer on the WFRE stage at In the Street and look at her now!

Sunny Sweeney: 11:00am

Born and raised in Longview, Texas, Sunny Sweeney is a performer sure to please the crowd. She is well known for her sassy country performances and her debut album “Heartbreak Hall of Fame.” This former improve comedian will definitely get the crowd laughing and dancing as the day’s celebration begins.

Sarah Darling: 1:30pm

You may recognize this name from the reality show “The Entertainer.” As a top finalist in the competition Sarah Darling is pleased at the way her career as a country singer has started to take off. Her soulful and poetic lyrics are sure to provide a great performance at the Second Street Stage.

Due West: 4:00pm

This country trio of best friends formed their band in 2004. Since then their reputation has grown beyond that of a Nashville tribute band to extend to their songwriting and performances with country stars like Lady Antebellum. Come out and see a show that will surely leave you wanting more.

Fourth Street Stage presented by DARCARS Toyota of Frederick

The Mark DeRose Band: 11:15- 12:30pm

This rock quartet has a passion for performing that radiates through the audience as the play their thoughtful and inspiring lyrics. Their upbeat performances are sure to spread their “feel good” vibe through the crowd as they day’s festivities kick off.

Bad Influence: 1:15-2:30pm

Know as one of Washington DC’s premiere blues bands “The Bad Influence Band” has been sharing their contemporary blues sounds throughout the US and abroad. The Blue Revue magazine has described this group as having “flair and finesse” that comes out in their original material. Be sure to check out the blues rhythms of the Bad Influence Band.

Chester River Run-Off: 3:15-4:30

Sharing their own original combination of country, bluegrass and americana these four performers have taken bluegrass to a unique and inspiring level. They have created lyrics and sounds that separate their performances from the typical bluegrass show and are sure to give a bluegrass performance unlike those you’ve seen in the past.

Seventh Street Stage

Saraceeta: 11:45-1:00pm

This stage will open with a combination of the original reggae beats of this energetic quintet and along with their versions of your favorite songs. Their covers include songs from rock and roll classics like, Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones. Saraceeta takes their fun loving attitude and infuses it into their original funk and reggae lyrics creating a performance that will give off an energy that will start the day off with a bang.

Kelly Bell Band: 1:45-3:00pm

Returning as a Frederick favorite yet again the Kelly Bell Band will be sharing their Phat Blues lyrics for the day’s celebration. You may remember their performance from the fourth of July, and this one is sure to be another one of their greatest sets here in the Frederick area.

Jah Works: 3:45- 5:00pm

The high energy, reggae lyrics of this group have been in high demand since 1993 when the group formed. They have played for the troops in the Middle East, as well as, for the presidential Inauguration of President Obama. They are known for the party style atmosphere there performances give off are sure to get your feet tapping as they share their fun reggae inspired songs.

Willie Barry: 11:30-12:30pm

This new act is a clear indication that talent and age are not linked. Only 15 years old, singer songwriter Willie Barry started playing the guitar two years ago and has continued to write his own lyrics, with the inspiration from his idol, Bob Dylan. His performance will include some of Dylan’s classics along with his original lyrics, which he has been working on for his album, “Yes We Can.” This fresh faced performer will show what a passion for music is all about.

The Jug Band: 1:00-2:00pm

Focused on preserving the history of jug bands and spreading the joy of live performance this local group is sure to give a folk performance that inspires a love of folk music. Relax and enjoy the sounds of a classic jug band.

ilyaimy: 2:30-3:30pm

Described as having “stately, thoughtful and intuitive lyrics,” by the Folk and Acoustic Music exchange, this Maryland native touring duo provides a performance that is influenced by folk and acoustic rock rhythms. Their performances have a unique approach to the classic folk sound that is sure to please.

Mason Vixon: 4:00-5:00pm

Joining us from Baltimore Maryland this country group is currently writing lyrics to create their debut album. They mix country with a little bit of rock to create a style all their own. Since 2009 Mason Vixon has been giving performances that always excite and inspire the crowd to get their toes tapping.

Olde Towne Beer and Wine Garden

Danny Grizzle: 11:45-1:00pm

The soulful and honest lyrics of this Frederick native performer are said to leave a lasting impression on audiences. His belief is that “Honesty in music is a very important concept.” This performance will give a refreshing and exciting approach to some classic songs along with highlighting the talent of this songwriter’s in his original lyrics.

Freddie Long Band: 1:45-3:00pm

Returning to their Frederick roots, the Freddie Long Band is described by IndieMusic.com as having “a sense of how to make music both fun and meaningful.” Their talents have brought them success in just a short few years. They have shared stages with singers like Jo Dee Messina and Edwin McCain as well as been nominated for several music awards. With rising success tributes to their love of music and passion for performance this Frederick originated band is not a performance to be missed.

Josh Burgess Band: 3:45-5:00pm

Well known throughout the Maryland and Virginia area the Josh Burgess band provides a grassroots rock experience that is always upbeat and fun. The group has originals that take a touch of influence from folk, funk and reggae to create their unique sound. Their self written originals and classic covers are sure to provide a crowd pleasing performance.

We here at Urbana Dance Studio want to get the word out to Frederick and Western Maryland that we are hosting a National Dance Day Celebration on July 31st 2010.

We will be hosting the event at the new Urbana Village Shopping Center located at the intersection of 355 (Frederick road) and route 80 in the heart of Urbana.

This is event was inspired by and in conjunction with the National Dance Day being advocated by the Fox program “So you think you can Dance” that is sponsored by the Dizzy Feet Foundation.

2010 SUMMER CONCERT SERIES PRESENTS ‘NATTY BEAUX’

July 18, 2010, Frederick, MD – Get ready to ‘finger-snap’ and ‘toe-tap’ with Natty Beaux, a swing band from the Washington D.C. area. Natty Beaux will perform at Baker Park Bandshell on July 18 as part of the Summer Concert Series, presented by Celebrate Frederick, Inc.

Composed of five talented and respected musicians, most of whom are Washington Area Music Association Award winners, the Natty Beaux give a certain twist to classic numbers from Louis Prima, Ray Charles, Louis Jordan, Bobby Darin, Elvis, Gene Vincent, Nat King Cole, Jerry Lee Lewis and more. The band’s love for classic jump-blues, rockabilly and swing makes their performance full with energy, diversity and fun. In fact, some fans have begun to refer to them as “The Rolling Stones of Swing.”

All Summer Concert Series performances are free to the public, but the Summer Concert Series Committee encourages you to bring a canned food item in lieu of admission. All items collected benefit the Frederick Food Bank.

The performance is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Baker Park Bandshell. DC Luau Entertainment will bring the island atmosphere to Frederick on July 8^th, sharing the aloha spirit with audiences in Baker Park! Audiences of all ages will enjoy this unique performance of Summerfest Family Theatre on the Baker Park Band Shell stage beginning at 10:30 a.m. This free live performance - part of the Summerfest Family Theatre - is presented by Celebrate Frederick, Inc.

Families will enjoy a colorful energy-filled luau Polynesian revue featuring dances of Hawaii, New Zealand, Somoa, and Tahiti. With authentic hand crafted costumes, island music, a fire dance demonstration, and audience participation; this show is one you do not want to miss!

While all Summerfest Theatre performances are free to the public, the Summerfest Family Theatre Committee encourages you to bring a canned food item in lieu of admission. Entertainment Schedule

June 16, 2010, Frederick, MD- Celebrate Frederick presents the 27^th annual Independence Day Celebration on Sunday July 4^th, from noon till dusk, in Baker Park, Frederick, MD. This years live entertainment variety is sure to please all listeners and will continue throughout the day’s festivities. There will be three stages featuring various entertainments including the Main Stage, Country Stage, and Bandshell areas.

Main Stage

Shane Gamble: The main stage entertainment will begin at 12:45pm, featuring Shane Gamble. Gamble provides a refreshing and engaging rock/pop performance. He is known for his soulful and melodic songs. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, he began to play the guitar at age 5 and has developed his musical career creating original and self produced albums. Gamble has released three albums to date. His songs have a mix of rock and blues with an acoustic originality. Be sure to catch this performance in hopes of a preview of his upcoming album release, fall 2010. Vinyl Rhino: From 3:00 to 4:30 pm Baltimore’s own Vinyl Rhino will take over the main stage. The five musicians that have come together to form this Rock cover band feature songs by popular artists like Pearl Jam, Led Zepellin, and Van Halen. Kelly Bell Band: At 5:15, the Kelly Bell Band will take the main stage. Jerrod Niemann: Beginning at 1:30pm the country stage will kick off with Kansas raised Jerrod Niemann. Inspired by country song performers like Lefty Frizzell and Conway Twitty, Niemann has written songs for stars like Garth Brooks resulting in top 40 hits. Josh Thompson: 4pm will bring one of country’s newest performers, Josh Thompson, to the stage. With his first album release in February 2010, Thompson has already been involved in tours featuring top chart artists like Brad Paisley and Derks Bentley. Lee Brice: At 7pm Lee Brice, Country’s top chart performer, will be taking the stage. Bandshell

The Bandshell entertainment will begin the day’s celebration with the opening ceremonies, starting at noon. At 2:45pm help select the best patriotic attire in the Best Patriotic Dressed Competition. Children are sure to have a great time with the various performers at the Bandshell. From 8pm till fireworks begin, the Spires Brass Band will begin an instrumental performance that will inspire an appreciation for the art of a traditional English Brass band. This will be the band’s 16^th year of Frederick performances and is sure to be one of their most outstanding performances to date.

FREDERICK’S 4^th—An Independence Day Celebration

Fun FOr All Ages

June 17, 2010, Frederick, MD – Celebrate Frederick presents the 27^th Annual Independence Day Celebration in Baker Park, Frederick, MD. This year’s celebration is sure to provide activities and entertainment for all ages!

The day’s festivities will kick-off with a patriotic opening ceremony in the Baker Park Bandshell at Noon. The ceremony will start the nation’s celebration off right and be followed up by live children’s entertainment and the Best Dressed competition at 2:45pm. The competition will select the most patriotic attire based on originality, patriotism, and use of red, white, and blue. Show off your most patriotic ensemble for a chance to win this friendly competition.

Be sure to sample Frederick’s finest chili selection in the Chili Cook-off competition, located in the Baker Park near the main stage. Cooks will begin preparing chili at 8:30am and the public can start sampling at 1:00pm. Taste all chili selections, for only $10.00, to help select the winner of the people’s choice award. Judging will take place at 3pm and awards will be given at 4pm.

Children of all ages will have an exciting day participating in the 2^nd Annual Scavenger Hunt. Stop by the gazebo information booth for a map and explore the set ups throughout Carillon villages to complete the Hunt. Located throughout the booths will be prizes, crafts, face painting and games for all to participate in. Once you complete your map return it to the information booth for prizes, giveaways and the chance to win a Frederick’s 4^th prize pack featuring a 3 day/2 night mini vacation with over 80 resorts to choose from, courtesy of Paige’s Promotions.

Festival to host International music, dance, food, and marketplace

Celebrate Frederick is pleased to announce this year’s 3rd annual Pangaea Frederick agenda. This unique festival aims to unite the Frederick community in celebrating culture, heritage, and the importance of diversity. This year, the festival is changing location from the Westridge Square Shopping Center to Frederick’s Baker Park, and is scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 8th.

A Naturalization Ceremony will kick off festivities at 11:00 a.m.

NATURALIZATION CEREMONY

The 2010 Naturalization Ceremony is an event that for many represents the culmination of years of commitment, patience, learning and arduous work toward achieving American citizenship. Celebrate Frederick is happy to share in this ceremony to recognize over 100 new US citizens as their take the Oath of Allegiance.

WORLD STAGE

Noon – 12:45 p.m. Asian Heritage Performances – Coordinated by LIFE & Discovery Inc. and Fiesta Asia. – From East Asia to South Asia, these performers will enthrall audiences with a mythical dragon, powerful martial arts, legendary drumming, intricate costumes and vibrant hip shaking!

1:15 – 2:00 PM Trio Caliente – This sizzling band fuses elements of Bossa Nova, gypsy rumba and contemporary flamenco with soothing jazz vocals and musical arrangements, creating a unique Latin-flavored sound.

2:45 – 3:30 PM Kwame and the Fritete African Drum and Dance Ensemble – This ensemble is committed to preserving and promoting West African culture through traditional rhythms, dance, song and chants.

4:15 – 5:00 PM The Crawdaddies – Flavors of Cajun, Zydeco and Reggae are combined to create a groove-laden sound that is unquestionably unique. This group’s eclectic and good-time spirit attract and thrill audiences of all ages.

FUTSAL TOURNAMENT – NEW!

The Inaugural Futsal Tournament begins at Noon and lasts throughout the afternoon. This soccer-like sport originated in South America, with strong ties to Portugal and Spain. GARDENS NAMED FOR ANNUAL BEYOND THE GARDEN GATES TOUR

Celebrate Frederick’s 2010 Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour features ten of Frederick’s finest private and public gardens that are sure to inspire your green thumb! These beautiful gardens will appeal to everyone, from the novice gardener to the seasoned pro. Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour will be held in Historic Frederick on Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, May 16th, from 1 to 5 p.m.

In addition, this year’s garden tour introduces a brand new Garden Marketplace. This inaugural marketplace will be located at the Official Garden Tour Hospitality Center in the City Hall Courtyard, and will fill the surrounding area with music, food, and garden related wares. Marketplace hours are 11am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. City Hall is located at 101 North Court Street in Frederick, Maryland.

This year’s tour showcases a variety of gardening styles, from Old World charm and formal elegance, to English-infused beauty.

The gardens for this year’s tour follow:

The Gardens of the Evangelical Lutheran Church - 31 E. Church Street

Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1738, and is the oldest Lutheran congregation in Maryland. The present sanctuary was built in 1854 and shortly thereafter was used as a hospital after the battle of Antietam in September 1862. The grounds on Church Street accommodate over 13 gardens that range from formal to casual. The gardens have played backdrop to beautiful weddings, as well as picnics and church gatherings. The 100 year old Elm and low growing Japanese Maple tree create a serene atmosphere for members of the congregation seeking private conversations or ministering. In addition to providing sanctuary, the gardens often play a teaching role. A local eagle scout earned a badge designing and laying out one of the many gardens. The garden is graciously maintained by John Andrews Landscape Enterprises.

The Garden of Larry and Ann Attanasio - 223 E. 2nd Street

Just two blocks from Market Street, escape from the summer’s heat in this casual and serene garden. Beyond the double gate of this 1840 Federal style house lies an inviting garden evocative of a "Charleston hidden porch". This shade garden offers an oasis from the summer's heat. Several lovely seating areas among ferns and potted plants create an inviting atmosphere which might cause you to linger a bit in this second garden.

The Garden of Guillermo & Dian Rubiera - 225 E. 2nd Street

Whether it was dirt, flowers or building hardscapes – Dian Guillermo grew up in the country working hands on in the garden. The idea of planning, executing and completing a plan in the garden is something Dian finds both relaxing and rewarding. Korean and Kousa Dogwood, a Japanese Maple and a large Gingko tree shared between neighbors add height to the garden. In addition to the Colorado Spruces, Nellie Steven Hollis, Aunt Dee and Prolific Wisteria, the butterfly bush adds even more ambiance to this lush landscape. The slate patio with bricked gold fish pond houses arbortorium pots of stella d’oro and hibiscus. As you follow the flower beds along the slate path to the back of the garden, steal a moment of calm and shade under the wisteria covered pergola.

The Garden of Ruth Schipper - 311 E. 3rd Street

A backyard filled with patchy spots of green grass dotted with clover, strawberry plants and three fruit trees generously “donated” from passing birds greeted this garden owner on move in day. Walking along a hand laid (and wobbly) brick path to the back gate the ideas began to flow. After the completion of the University of Maryland Extension Service Master Gardeners class, Ruth began work on her “canvas” at 311 E. Third Street. With the help of Hawkins Landscaping, the garden and path was laid out as you see it today. The new stone path incorporates the bricks of the wobbly one of old and leads to a small statue of St. Fiacre – patron saint of gardeners. Dominated by perennials and vigorous self-seeing plants, the garden also boasts many plantings given by good friends. Watching these plantings return to life each Spring is considered a wonderful reminder of affection and gratitude for this Master Gardener.

The Garden of Tom & Cathy Canning - 327 E. 3rd Street

A blend between formal and cottage styles, you are visiting a garden in the season for which it was specifically designed. Spending much of their summer in Cape May, the Canning’s wanted to be sure to take advantage of the beautiful Frederick spring before heading off for vacation. A flagstone entrance was constructed off the screened in porch to lead you into the garden. While an antique park lamp and iron-gate create a vintage inspired backdrop to the blooming peonies.

The Garden of Michael & Patricia Harrison at Café Anglais - 238 N. Market Street

Daisy’s Garden, named for the Harrison’s pet dog, provides patrons of Café Anglais the chance to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea. This peaceful English style garden is a natural setting for many bridal showers and birthdays parties here in downtown Frederick. Each winter, the Harrison’s eagerly await the spring to hear the birds, see the bulbs emerge and plan on a summer of color. A variety of ferns and one large hemlock mark this landscaped yard with a mix of Astilbe, Campanula, Primrose and Hydrangea. Three unique features were added to the garden upon some apartment renovations by the homeowners. The claw footed tubs proved to be the perfect vessels for water features and planting.

The Garden at the Record Street Home for the Aged - 115 Record Street

The Record Street Home was established to provide “means of obtaining the comfort and security so necessary for the repose of mind and body which should ever attend the declining years of life” and is the only one of its kind still operable in the State of Maryland. This garden provides a pleasant place for its residents to enjoy the outdoors or remain active through light gardening. The two patios are ideal for residents to relax with friends and family during visits while observing the bird and butterfly residents of the garden.

The Garden of Marlborough House - 101 Record Street

You will find the beauty of this garden not behind the garden gates but in the front. The garden tended by residents Tom & Madge Yewell, Dick & Franci Wryough and Chip Dorsey borders the front of this house on the corner of Record and Church Streets. Essentially a planting garden, take note of the large Pyracatha as most people strolling by home do as well. A back patio plays host to parties and dinners in the summer and boasts items brought back from one of the residents previous homes in Mexico.

The Garden of Kevin & Margaret Hluch - 113 W. All Saints Street

Described by the Hluch’s as a space for meditation, their Zen layout brings a different style garden to the tour. Not solely considered a place for relaxation, the garden comfortably hosts BBQ’s, cocktails parties and a possible wedding in the near future. Central to the garden is a pergola and serene lily pond which provides the ideal spot to take rest in the space. The garden and Carroll Creek provide a wonderful backdrop for the many sculptures the Hluch’s treasure.

The Market Street Garden and The Director’s Rose Garden of the Federated Charities of Frederick 22 S. Market Street

Two distinctive gardens can be found at this location, one an original “postage stamp” style garden and the other a secluded niche tucked behind the building. The Market Street Garden, situated along the side of the building, is reminiscent of the Greek revival style of the residence itself. Visitors will be welcomed by the original Wickersham wrought iron fencing and gates surrounding this space. The Director’s Rose Garden can be found in the rear of the building. Both gardens are dominated by roses. The Market Street Garden is further enhanced by a host of perennials and annuals, including hostas, English ivy and Prairie Mallow plants. Matt Shelton of Innovative Landscapes graciously donates his talents to help maintain these gardens.

As you’re wandering through each garden, take a minute to watch the local artists who will be creating their own vision of the space, and don’t forget to visit the Garden Marketplace at the Frederick City Hall Courtyard for garden-related merchandise, food, and refreshments.

Don’t miss the 3rd Annual Pangaea Frederick – A Festival Celebrating Our Heritage, scheduled to be held Saturday, May 8th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year, the Pangaea Festival is moving from the Westridge Square Shopping Center to Frederick’s Baker Park. This substantial change in location allows for additional space, as well as a larger number of activities and participants. The goal of the Pangaea Festival is to give visitors an opportunity to learn about and enjoy the growing diversity within Frederick. The event offers the chance to celebrate different cultures through unique food, entertainment, traditions, and arts.

Due to this year’s larger location, Celebrate Frederick is still looking for participants to bring greater diversity to the event. Non-profit groups, sponsors, craft vendors, food vendors, and entertainers are invited to apply to be a part of Pangaea and bring their diverse heritage to this important festival.

Harmonious Blacksmith - Free Concert at the Mount

Emmitsburg, MD - The Mount St. Mary’s University Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present a concert by the early music ensemble Harmonious Blacksmith on Friday March 26, 2010.

The evening’s concert, Music from the Mediterranean, will feature early music from Spain to Italy in an exciting program of works by Soler, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, and Corelli. Harmonious Blacksmith combines the best of creative conceptual programming with the fire of virtuoso performing and improvising. Uniquely focused on the connection between composition and improvisation in Renaissance and Baroque music, Harmonious Blacksmith looks back to the age-old practices of improvising dance music and ornamenting songs.

The ensemble has been praised for its “virtuosity manifested…strongly in an uncanny ability to create highly inventive music on the spot,” with another reviewer noting that “from the beginning, the listener had a feeling of connection with them. They were lively, enthusiastic and expressive in their playing…”

Harmonious Blacksmith consists of Joseph Gascho, harpsichord; Justin Godoy, recorder; and William Simms, baroque guitar and the orbo. Simms is also a member of the music faculty at Mount St. Mary’s where he teaches guitar.

The concert is presented as part of the ongoing effort by the Department of Visual and Performing Arts to make high quality musical performances available to audiences in the region for little or no admission. The concert will be held at the Marion Burk Knott Auditorium on the Mount campus at 7:30pm.

CELEBRATE FREDERICK ANNOUNCES ITS 2010 EVENT SCHEDULE

Celebrate Frederick, Inc. would like to announce their 2010 schedule of events. Celebrate Frederick, Inc. is a private non-profit corporation working in partnership with the City of Frederick in the planning and implementation of special events and activities for the community. A Board of Directors oversees this organization, which houses eight volunteer event committees and produces fifteen events that are sanctioned by the Mayor and Board of Alderman.

This season, Celebrate Frederick, Inc. is changing the dates of six events, as well as postponing the Summer Nite Cinema event for the 2010 event year. The following events will be held on different dates: Light the Creek, In the Street, On the Deck Party, Scents & Sweets Competition, Festival of Lights, and Kris Kringle Procession. In addition to date changes, the Pangaea Frederick Festival is changing locations. Formally held at the Westridge Shopping Center along Route 40/West Patrick Street, the 3rd annual event will be held in Baker Park.

The 2010 season begins with Pangaea Frederick – A Festival Celebrating our Heritage. This exciting festival will be held in Baker Park on Saturday, May 8th, from 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Pangaea’s aim is to unite and celebrate the cultural diversity of Frederick through food, art, music, and traditions. Start the fun by welcoming over one hundred new citizens in a Naturalization Ceremony, and continue enjoying the festival through various displays and activities from around the world, including the first annual Futsal Tournament.

Join us on Saturday, May 15th and Sunday, May 16th for Beyond the Garden Gates Garden Tour & Marketplace. New this season, visitors can enjoy not only beautiful public and private gardens in historic downtown Frederick, but also a brand new Inaugural Garden Marketplace. Located at the Official Garden Tour Hospitality Center, the marketplace will fill the City Hall Courtyard and surrounding streets with music, food, and garden related wares. Tickets to the event are $20.00 and are available for purchase online now.

Summer Concert Series will be held every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. during June, July, and August in Baker Park Bandshell. With the first concert beginning Sunday, June 13th, visitors can enjoy free concerts featuring local, regional and national performers. Enjoy free children’s entertainment at the Summerfest Family Theatre every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. during June, July and August. Local, regional and national performers will showcase theater, music, dance, magic and more! Don’t miss the first performance on Thursday, June 24th. Come to Baker Park on Sunday, July 4th to enjoy Frederick’s 4th – An Independence Day Celebration. The largest Independence Day festival in Frederick County begins at Noon with an opening ceremony, and continues non-stop with children’s activities, a volleyball tournament, chili cook-off, best patriotic dressed competition, musical entertainment, fabulous food and more. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk!

Look forward to this year’s Light The Creek, held on Friday, September 10th, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Carroll Creek Linear Park. This concert at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater will jump-start In The Street festivities with music, beer, wine, food, and the chance to support your favorite charity. Please note this date change!

Beginning in 2010, In the Street has officially moved to the “Second Saturday in September”. Celebrate In The Street, one of Frederick’s biggest annual events, held Saturday, September 11th, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Market Street and Carroll Creek Linear Park. This famous outdoor street festival features eight blocks of themed fun, stages of live entertainment, beer and wine gardens, children’s activities, delicious food and much more! And don’t forget to begin the day with the Frederick Steeplechaser’s Mile Run at 9:30 a.m.

Food, drinks and music are in store for On The Deck Party, Saturday, September 11th, 5:30- 9:00 p.m. This fundraising event concludes the festivities of In The Street, and is held on the top level of the Carroll Creek Parking Deck. Must be 21 with a proper ID to attend.

Kick off your holiday season by attending the Holiday Art Competition at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, Frederick. This juried art competition is held Wednesday, December 1st, at 5:30 p.m. and showcases different depictions of the Holidays in Frederick. The winning artist earns a $1,000 cash prize, and the winning illustration will be used in the following year’s holiday ad campaign.

Enjoy the holiday season with the Scents & Sweets Competition. This joyous event will be held Thursday, December 2nd at the Cultural Arts Center, Frederick – new location and new date! All ages will be delighted by the displays of gingerbread houses and floral arrangements in this Holiday open house. Winners will be selected and announced during the event.

Discover the charm and simplicity of the Holiday season during the 2010 Festival of Lights. Come to the City Hall Courtyard on Friday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m. to participate in this ceremonial event. Gatherers at City Hall are given a candle to hold. After holiday greetings and an inspirational message, each candle is lit, filling the Courtyard with magnificent light. Please note this date change!

This year, the Candlelight House Tour will be held on Saturday, December 4th, 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 5th, 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. For $20.00, visitors can take a self-guided tour inside magnificent private homes in historic Frederick. Each historically significant home features detailed architectural nuances and holiday decorations.

Rejoice in Old World Holiday magic with the Kris Kringle Procession, held Friday December 10th at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Frederick. This walking parade features German/English characters of yesteryear, including Weinacht Man, Kris Kindle and Pelsnickle. Joining the procession are other children’s favorites such as Frosty, Rudolph and Kris Kringle. The parade concludes at the Baker Park Bandshell with the closing ceremony and the lighting of the City Christmas Tree. Please note this date change!

Bring your children to this season’s Children’s Weekend, held Saturday, December 11th and Sunday, December 12th. Children will delight in a variety of activities such as ornament painting, storytelling, belsnickling and breakfast with Santa. Where: A public lecture: Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 7 pm at the Knott Auditorium – Mount St. Mary’s University.

David Cole is a professor at Georgetown University Law Center, a volunteer staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights, legal affairs correspondent for The Nation, a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, and a commentator on the PBS NewsHour, and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

He is the author of six books. Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror, published in 2007, won the Palmer Civil Liberties Prize for best book on national security and civil liberties. Enemy Aliens: Double Standards and Constitutional Freedoms in the War on Terrorism, received the American Book Award in 2004. No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System was named Best Non-Fiction Book of 1999 by the Boston Book Review and best book on an issue of national policy in 1999 by the American Political Science Association. His most recent book is The Torture Memos: Rationalizing the Unthinkable, published by The New Press in September 2009.

Professor Cole has litigated many significant constitutional cases, including Texas v. Johnson and United States v. Eichman, which extended First Amendment protection to flagburning; National Endowment for the Arts v. Finley, which challenged political content restriction on NEA funding; and Massachusetts v. Sullivan, which challenged restrictions on what federally funded family planning centers could tell women about abortion. Since 9/11, he has been involved in many of the nation’s most important cases involving civil liberties and national security.

He has received numerous awards for his human rights work, including honors from the Society of American Law Teachers, the National Lawyers Guild, the ACLU of Southern California, the ABA Section on Individual Rights and Responsibilities, and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Disaster Victims including the Haiti Earthquake

On Saturday, February 20th from 2:00 -5:00 p.m. the Weinberg Center will be joining forces with Scott Ambush of Spyro Gyra, Deanna Bogart, Shane Gamble, The Knight Brothers, and other musicians to put on a special benefit concert for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Proceeds for this event will go to both the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund and the Frederick County Chapter of the American Red Cross. During times of economic disaster, Americans are more than generous to step in and help out, globally, nationally and locally. The Weinberg Center is directing the funds raised from each ticket be divided with $7.50 of each ticket supporting Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund, and $2.50 of each ticket supporting Frederick County Red Cross Disaster Relief. MacMaster's incandescent musicianship and boundless energy have earned her a Grammy nomination, Juno Award for Best Instrumental Album, and several Canadian Country Music Awards for Fiddler of the Year. The Band

Time for Three (Tf3 for short) is a charismatic string trio which transcends traditional classification, weaving elements of classical, country, western, gypsy, and jazz idioms into their own unique blend, one which knows no boundaries. The trio was born in Philadelphia, where the three Curtis Institute graduates—violinists Zach De Pue and Nick Kendall and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer—discovered that improvising, composing, and arranging was a lot more fun than playing with an orchestra.

KRIS KRINGLE PROCESSION BRINGS THE MAGIC OF THE HOLIDAYS TO DOWNTOWN FREDERICK

‘Tis the season! Kris Kringle comes to town only once a year and you don’t want to miss it. On Friday, December 4^th Kris Kringle will be leading his procession through the beautifully illuminated streets of historic downtown Frederick. Join in this joyous tradition starting on East Street and ending at Baker Park with the lighting of our City’s tree. The event, free to the public, begins at 6:30 p.m. and is presented to you by Celebrate Frederick, Inc. The procession, along with the thousands of tiny white lights illuminating the streets, showcases the small town charm that makes Frederick so special during the holidays. Children from local schools, dance troupes, girl scouts, and boy scouts dressed as reindeer, snowflakes, angels, elves, gifts, and characters from The Nutcracker will accompany characters representing Frederick’s German/English heritage, as well as classic favorites including Frosty, Rudolph, and of course Kris Kringle though Frederick’s downtown streets. The parade runs from East Street to East Patrick Street, turns onto North Market Street, and then turns onto West Second Street, ending at Baker Park. Some of the procession’s featured characters bring to life the German heritage in Frederick. Pelsnickle and Weinacht Man are known to help Kris Kringle judge whether children have been bad or good. Krist Kindle is an angel-like messenger who leaves gifts for good children in small baskets. Other characters in the procession include popular modern characters such as Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. The procession concludes in Baker Park with carol singing and holiday greetings from Mayor William J. Holtzinger, the Snow Queen, and Kris Kringle himself. The official Frederick City tree is then lit after a countdown by the crowd.

CANDLELIGHT HOUSE TOUR BRINGS CHEER TO THE SEASON

The 2009 Candlelight House Tour will showcase eight beautifully decorated historic homes in Frederick. Presented by PNC Bank, the event will be held Saturday, December 5th from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 6th from Noon to 4 p.m. Between each finely ornamented home will be luminaries to light your way and carolers to fill the air with holiday sounds.

Light refreshments will be served at the Hospitality Suite, sponsored by Renewal by Andersen. The Hospitality Suite will be located at City Hall at 101 North Court Street. The 2009 and vintage holiday ornaments, posters, and postcards will be available for purchase during the tour. The third “floor” of this home is not quite as it seems. The floor boasts a sloped ceiling from front to back. The ceiling grades into almost nothing about 8 feet back from the third floor windows. In addition, the date of 1859 posted between the second floor windows separates the two homes on E. 2nd Street, which internally are constructed as mirror images. While the kitchen and balcony were renovated sometime in the 20th century, stone steps in the basement can still be found leading to what is now the dining room. While exiting the back gate note the beautiful evergreen garden. This space is rumored to have housed part of an orchard which stretched the length of E. 2nd Street. The Costello home has been beautifully decorated by the homeowners and En Masse.

9 West Second Street

In the 1820’s, this Federal style home is recognized by the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation and National Historic Register. Prior to the 2001 purchase of the home by Bretta and Hunt Bowers, a twenty year series of renters occupied 9 W. 2nd Street. As you pass through the entryway of the home, note the ornate woodwork surrounding the windows, doors and the 15 foot square parlors with soaring ceilings. An intricate wooden carved mantle crafted by a Hessian solider can be found in the second parlor as well as a jib window opening to a small sunroom. The parlors, dining room and entry floors are oak with mahogany borders and each room has original fireplaces. The kitchen features original repainted cabinets and a butler’s pantry in place of stairs between the dining

room and kitchen. As you exit the Bowers’ home, note the renovated patio and garden patiently awaiting spring showers and summer sun. The Bowers home has been graciously decorated by The Garden Club of Frederick.

107 West Third Street

Levy Family, Frederick business owners and residents, occupied the home at 107 W. 3rd Street until the 1980’s. The current owners Chris and Jane Midgett are only the fourth to reside in this historical home. As you enter the foyer the converted gas chandeliers, ceiling medallions and entry foyer light are original to the home. The original wallpaper hanger’s signature, from 1880, can be found on the north wall of the parlor. Original gold cornices can be found throughout the parlor and dining room. A brass button in the dining

room floor, now covered by a rug, was once used to call the maid to service. The house has two jibs, one in the parlor and one directly above it in the bedroom area. The chestnut staircase has never been painted and a “swing-out” gas arm can be found on the second floor. During renovations, the brick from the original fireplace was used to create the arch in the kitchen, while the Maryland heart pine floors were finished and left as they have always been. The pass through glass window opening to the butler’s pantry was retained as well. Three of the homes bathrooms have been renovated with careful attention to historical detail. The Midgett home has been beautifully decorated by the homeowners, friends and the Green-walled Garden Club.

111 West Third Street

Relive the Victorian Revival at 111 W. 3rd Street. The Muszynski home is the second on the tour designated as a Frederick County Landmark. The unique architectural design of this property has been described as a provincial copy of sophisticated urban style. The home is one of a pair of three-story attached Victorian brick houses that can be found on 3rd Street. Constructed in the Flemish Medieval style along with an ornate third story design, the property brings a different architectural style to the tour. The slate covered

Mansard roof showcases two Flemish gables adorned with terra cotta and tin designs. Before entering the home note the two-story high rectangular bays constructed of various flat and arched windows that divide the house into two distinct sections. Treasured oil paintings, created by the Muszynski family, line the walls of this architectural gem. The expanded kitchen, renovated by Clyde Berger, adds to the grandeur of the house. The exterior wall, centralized in the space, pays homage to the bones of the home. The Muszynski home has been graciously decorated by Matt Triche.

106 North Court Street

Richard Potts, the country’s first U.S. State’s Attorney, originally built this home as a four room office building. A deed for property transfer was signed by Roger Brooke Taney, who, along with his brother-in-law, Francis Scott Key, likely utilized the building for office space as well. Before entering the home, note the original doorbell inscribed R.

Potts. The doorbell knob, which jangles a bell suspended from a spiral strip of wire inside the house, still alerts Ann and Peter Hobart to visitors. Once in the kitchen you are standing directly above the original 12’ x 12’ x 12’ ice house. The homeowners recently gained access to the ice house and discovered an enclosed brick room which has yet to be investigated. Both sides of Mrs. Hobart’s family are deeply rooted in the history of Frederick and the surrounding area. The portraits of Ann’s great great great great grandparents, Eleanor and George Alexander Kennedy, hang above the mantle in the living room. The portraits were painted in 1800 by Charles Peale Polk, nephew of the noted American Painter Charles Willson Peale. The portraits were transported from Jacksonville to Frederick courtesy of Ann’s brother, Charles Nicodemus Wilson, to specifically be a part of our annual tour. The Hobart home has been graciously decorated by Adrienne Summers.

115 Record Street

The Record Street Home will have adjusted hours for the tour. Please note the home will be open on Saturday from 6:00 – 9:30 pm and Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.

Built by William Tyler Page, former resident at 121 Record Street, the Record Street Home was donated in 1892 by Mrs. Ann Ross and Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Ross. The home was established to provide “means of obtaining the comfort and security so necessary for the repose of mind and body which should ever attend the declining years

of life.” The building has seen three additions over the years and is currently a licensed assisted living/life care facility and home to 21 residents. The three story brick home, built in the Greek Revival style, includes formal parlors and a spacious dining room furnished with period pieces donated by past and present residents. Visitors are greeted in the entrance foyer by a beautiful mural of the Frederick landscape painted by Virginia McLaughlin. Please note the John Fessler clock and the H.R. Eisenbrandt Sons music box. The home has a lovely flower and herb garden for enjoyment by the ladies and guests. Record Street Home is the only one of its kind still operable in the State of Maryland and the operation of the home is in large part due to the generous donations of the Frederick community. The lovely interior of The Home has been graciously enhanced for the holiday season by the Wormans Mill Garden Club.

121 Record Street

The boyhood home of William Tyler Page, author of the American’s Creed and descendant of the tenth President of the United States John Tyler, can be toured at 121 Record Street. Purchased in 2007 by John & Kirsten Johansen, their careful renovation has preserved and yet modernized this Federal style home and its later Victorian exterior

embellishments. The house retains many of its original features including the stairway, deep crown moldings, “6 over 6” windows and yellow pine flooring. The cooking fireplace in the kitchen features the original pivoting “cooking arm” used for suspending food over an open fire. The careful restoration of all five fireplace mantles in the home is consistent with the Johansen’s passion for the preservation of historic architecture. As you tour the house, note the 18th and 19th century American and English antique furniture. Landscape paintings in the Continental, French Barbizon, Hudson River School, and Danish styles, along with a range of contemporary art and Italian botanical engravings highlight this couples’ eclectic and comfortable style. The Johansen home has been beautifully decorated by Sharon Mesa, En Masse and Jutta Terrell, Etiquette Tabletop Designs.

117 West Second Street

Defined as the residence of a Presbyterian minister, the Manse currently serves as home to the Reverend Dr. Eric Myers, his wife Lisa and family. The three story Federalist style home located at W. 2^nd Street was built on land purchased from Frederick Schley for a total cost of $2,546.10 by Geo. McCahan. Much of the early beautification and maintenance of the property is due to the diligence of the Mite Society. This society of

female church members (established in 1885) derived its name from the organization’s bylaws which stated “the regular fee shall be one cent per week, to be paid quarterly, semi-annually or yearly.” Their work can be seen in the preservation of the five fireplaces throughout the home and the built in glass cabinets of the dining room. The most recent renovation, the Manse side porch, was completed in 2009. The Manse has played host to many visitors and residents of Frederick. In fact, General Stonewall Jackson, a close friend of Reverend John B. Moss (1857-1862), tethered his horse to a tree out in front of the Manse during his frequent trips to see his good friend. The Manse of Frederick Presbyterian Church has been graciously decorated by Paul Thompson of Ec’clectibles.

For nearly two decades, the name of a time honored Irish traditional jig has become synonymous with the name of one of the most engaging ensembles in Irish music—Cherish the Ladies. Originally organized by folklorist/musician Mick Moloney for a one-time concert in the early 1990s, Cherish the Ladies has captivated audiences with their talent and presence ever since. With their dedication and rising popularity, the Ladies found themselves sponsored by the Ethnic Folk Arts Center and the National Endowment for the Arts to produce a critically acclaimed concert series set to feature rising female stars in the world of Irish traditional music. Combining musical arrangements with step dancers, Cherish the Ladies puts on shows filled with upbeat dance numbers and soothing, traditional Irish ballads, making their debut album, The Back Door, an instant success in 1992. Dr. Dans is a graduate of La Salle Military Academy, Manhattan College, and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He is currently an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he directed the required medical ethics course for eight years. Since 1990, Dr. Dans has written the Physician at the Movies column for Pharos, the quarterly journal of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

He is the author of Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say Aah! about the portrayal of doctors in film. His latest book entitled Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners looks at the portrayal of Christians and Christianity in about 200 films from 1905 through 2008. Using film clips, he will trace the arc of Hollywood’s treatment of Christians, especially Catholics, from decidedly favorable until 1970 to mainly negative since.
