Frederick, Maryland – Finally, after months of planning it’s time to relax and enjoy the 13th annual An Evening on the Riviera, the area’s premier charity food and wine extravaganza that showcases the region’s finest restaurants, caterers, wine cellars, and entertainment. The black-tie optional event is only two short weeks away on October 9, 2009 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the E-ventplex at the Frederick Fairgrounds, Null Building, 797 East Patrick Street, Frederick, Maryland. A distinguished panel of food experts will present awards for food presentation and quality. Several microbreweries will also share their unique micro beers. Adding to the glitz and fun of the night is the tabletop competition, in which local designers and special event professionals exhibit their creativity and decorate the sponsors’ tables. Musical entertainment will be provided by ‘Round Midnight. An Evening on the Riviera also hosts the best silent auction in the area, which features art, jewelry, travel, sports, spa retreats, and more!

Tales of Terror - An Evening of Horror and Hilarity

Celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe with Joshua Kane in Tales of Terror - An Evening of Horror and Hilarity, Thursday, October 29, 2009 –7:30 p.m.

Who knew that the 200th celebration of the birth of Edgar Allan Poe would create such a celebration in Frederick? The Big Read did. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The Big Read provided the opportunity for Maryland Public Television, Frederick Reads, and the Weinberg Center for the Arts to collaborate to bring Poe focused events to Frederick during the month of October and the culminating event will be held at the Weinberg Center, just in time for Halloween. Celebrate your Halloween weekend by taking a step back in time and revisiting the thrilling tales of gothic horror fiction- all with a surprising element of comedy. In a rare theatrical experience and act of ingenious narration, master storyteller Joshua Kane will deliver a shocking blast of horror and hilarity at the Weinberg Center of the Arts on October 29 at 7:30 pm. when he presents his Poe inspired one man show- Tales of Terror an Evening of Horror and Hilarity. Tickets are on sale now! Tickets range from $12 -$30; children pricing begins at $12. Recommended for children 8 years and older.

Come see Joshua Kane relive readings of The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, Hop-Frog, The Masque of the Red Death, and more. With his dramatic and engaging voice, Joshua Kane captures the bizarre works of Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens and Ambrose Bierce and tactfully combines the most dreadful tales with comic situations to keep the audience on the edge of their seats in thrill and laughter. Kane, a classically trained actor, skillfully blends the imaginative side of solo theatre with the ancient art of storytelling, creating a “Poetent” and compelling performance. Using a "bare bones" stage arrangement and nothing more than his deep understanding of horror literature, Kane fills the stage with unforgettable characters and tales, while bewitching the audience with a devilish sense of fun.

Make sure you don’t miss your chance to spend an unforgettable evening with Joshua Kane and discover for yourself the line between horror and hilarity. To purchase tickets, call the Weinberg Center for the Arts at 301-600-2828, 301-600-2838 TTY or stop by the Box Office Tuesday –Wednesday 10am to 4 pm; Thursday – Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or visit www.weinbergcenter.org

The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from United States and world literature. Local Big Read initiatives will focus on the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe, with activities taking place throughout October 2009. The Joshua Kane event will be one of many hosted around the Frederick community.

The Weinberg Center for the Arts, a municipal facility of the City of Frederick, is located at 20 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick, Maryland. The historic theatre opened in 1926 as the Tivoli, and it and was donated to the City of Frederick in 1978. Today as one of the region’s premier presenting facilities, the 1,200 seat Weinberg Center offers professional LIVE! Series, including dance, music, theatre, family performances and films, weekday performances for students, and classic movies. Performance space and professional services are available to a variety of community arts groups, civic and business organizations, and other arts promoters.
